General Questions

How does the design process work?
We charge an hourly rate for professional design work with a two hour minimum. One of our designers will meet with you and give you an estimate of the time it will take in designing your landscape project. When the design is completed, it will be presented to you with a personal explanation of what the designer created. The project will be priced as if we are installing the job. If you proceed with the proposed installation, and you spend four times the value of the design, your design fee will be included in your purchase. Therefore, your paid design fee will be credited toward your purchase.

Can I get a low maintenance landscape that is still attractive?
Yes, you can have a low maintenance landscape. There is a big difference between a low-maintenance and a no-maintenance landscape. Low maintenance we define as being a landscape you only spend one hour per week maintaining. Plant selection, mulching practices, and consistency play a big part in this.

When is the best time to move plants?
The best time to move most perennials is usually spring and fall. Most trees and shrubs should ideally be moved in dormancy (late fall to early spring) for best results. Southern Magnolias are best moved in August. Trees and shrubs can be moved in the warmer months, however, special care needs to be taken to keep the root ball in tact and it must be watered well to establish roots again in its new location.

A bug has been chewing on my plant, what do I spray it with?
There are several insects that feast on plants in our area. Our trained horticultural team can tell you what you need to spray with. Just because you have holes in the foliage, doesn't always mean insect damage. There are fungi that will cause this in some plants. Laurels are especially prone to "shot-hole fungus".

What is your warranty?
We warranty every plant we install, in which you purchased from us, for one year from the date it is installed. We have care instructions that we give every customer, and these instructions must be followed or the warranty will be voided.

When, and with what do I fertilize my plant?
Different plants require different fertilizers. We carry at least four different fertilizers for different types of plants. The three numbers of a fertilizer, for example 5-10-5, represent 5 parts nitrogen, 10 parts phosphorus and 5 parts potassium. Generally, nitrogen is for the foliage, the phosphorus is for bloom, and the potassium is for root development. Spring time is usually the best time to fertilize, if you are only fertilizing once per year.

What type of mulch to you recommend?
Mulches we use and recommend are pinebark and pinestraw. These are the only mulches we use in our installations and that we sell at the Garden Center. Hardwood mulches are not recommended because:
- They won't mat, which allows moisture and the necessary oxygen to go straight to the roots
- Roots need oxygen which is inhibited by the matting
- It fades in color
- It smells bad
- black mulch has coal dust in it which makes it messy with pets and children
Pinebark and pinestraw are better because:
- They won't mat, which allows moisture and the necessary oxygen to go straight to the roots
- Pinebark holds its color much longer
- Both have a natural pine smell
- The breakdown of these mulches is especially beneficial to acid loving plants like hollies, azaleas, rhododendrons, pines, clethra, pieris, magnolias, and other evergreens
